Wing Chun Martial Arts Foley
Kuala Lumpur
Project Brief
Students are required to form a group of 3, and to design and build a 1:1 martial arts stand for a selected martial arts, that respects to the local culture and genius loci within the University's campus. The stand must incorporate and support the daily practices of the martial arts practitioner.
My group's chosen martial arts was Wing Chun, as it was a suitable martial arts for people living in an urban context, popularized in Hongkong, with limited land area, reflecting Kuala Lumpur's urban context. We chose a site which was located on a slope, facing the prominent Angsana tree of my campus, due to Wing Chun's strong correlation with mountains and nature.
Our design uses the a narrative design approach.
Where we stemmed our designs from the origin of wing chun, the fight between a crane and snake.
The first end of the design is symbolic of the snake, with curving trail.
While the latter end is inspired by the crane, with large overstretched wings and being white in color
The training course goes as,
One must first master balance, hence we make use of the site's tree roots from the angsana tree, having practioners balance themselves while transversing through the design.
Then, we extracted the "wooden dummy" commonly used in wingchun into a trail of different angular arms to practise on.
Finally, for master practitioners, the 6 point 5 pole training structure, where there is a wooden pivoted wooden structure design for users to practise aim and stabbing motions.
Above is the jointing exploration and technique we used in the design
