Bu ka Malay Heritage Boat Making Academy
Pulau Duyong
Terengganu.

Brief:

The students are required to embark themselves in the process of data collection in a selected proposed site in order to begin the design process. The study will also introduce them to analyze and synthesis the issue of that particular area. This is an individual assignment that required the students to design an “academy of craft” as the physical entity. Students should demonstrate a comprehensive design that shows sensitivity to local issues and will explore the glory of locally selected craftsmanship into designed and functional building.

This project calls for the design based on the heritage Malay sailor + craftsmanship that once contributed to naval technologies. The early idea of “balance-lug sail” and the design of the “Jong” (from which the English word junk is derived) are some of the examples. Pulau Duyung, a perfect site for the “tukang” or “pandai kapal” to bring back the skills of boat making as to re-ignite the passion and interest for the new generation. Here the apprentices will learnt the hardship and the soul of heritage boat making from a master. This academy somehow will produce new “tukang” or “pandai kapal” that ensure the continuity of the legacy.

The academy also is like a continuation of people activities around the site such as fishing industry, annual events organized by the local and others as it offer has good connections to the previous and the public are encouraged to visit the boat making spaces as well as attend the regular public lecture program, delivered each year by a distinguished “pandai kapal”. The students must come out with research regarding the context, issues, boat-making craftsmanship, functions, laws and regulation as well as other information related in order to complete the task.

I decided to hand render the project, due to the Malay boat making being a very hands on, with almost no use of machinery, I wanted my project to show that dedication and spirit.
Original sizes of the drawings are Portrait A0 papers.
